Voyage Cancelled After Death of Elderly Lady Abandoned on Island
A two-month journey around the Australian Coast has been cancelled following the fatal incident of an senior lady who was left behind by the cruise liner on a distant tropical isle.
The elderly woman had been walking on Lizard Island with shipmates from the vessel, but broke off from the group for a rest. The liner left without her and went back after some time after the personnel discovered the woman was not present.
An extensive rescue mission located her body the subsequent day.
Officials are investigating the event, alongside police and the medical examiner.
Chief Executive of the shipping company announced that travelers and staff on the Coral Adventurer were informed that the remainder of the cruise had been cancelled due to the "unfortunate death and earlier mechanical issues".
Through an announcement, he added that passengers would be issued a complete reimbursement, and said the organization was working "to organize the return journeys of the individuals via specially arranged planes".
Regulatory bodies also issued an updated statement, and said they had "issued a notice to the Master" prohibiting any new passengers from entering the vessel.
The representative said that they would inspect the vessel in Cairns upon its arrival.
Chronology of Occurrences
The vessel initially left the coastal city on the 24th of October, and was just two days into the journey at the moment of the senior passenger's death. The tropical location was the initial destination on the itinerary.
Guests on the ship - who generally pay large sums of currency to take part in the expedition - were transported there for a day trip with the choice of trekking or snorkelling.
Next of Kin Response
The offspring of the victim said that her family was "stunned and saddened that the liner left Lizard Island after an planned tour without my mother".
Via her announcement, she characterized her parent as an "vigorous 80-year-old" who was a member of a bushwalking group.
"According to scant information we have been provided, it seems that there was a lapse of responsibility and common sense," she mentioned.
She continued that she wished the investigation would be able to determine what "the organization should have done that might have protected Mum's life".
"Based on information from the police that it was a extremely warm period, and she took sick on the uphill trek," she stated.
"They requested her to go back, without accompaniment. Then the boat left, apparently without conducting a roll call.
"At a certain moment in that chain of events, or soon after, mum died, without company."
Company Response
In a statement, the CEO verified that the organization was "working closely with officials to assist their investigation".
He mentioned that the firm was "extremely apologetic that this has occurred" and had extended its full support to the family.
Maritime Business Practices
The vessel accommodates up to 120 travelers with 46 staff, according to corporate data. It was purpose-built to reach isolated locations of the nation's coast and is equipped with "tenders" - compact vessels used to take travelers on shore trips.
Occurrences like this are rare, and cruise ships have procedures to track which travelers are getting on or getting off, according to industry experts.
"Leaving covertly or [back] onboard simply isn't an choice," a specialist remarked.
Cruise lines consider these methods very seriously and have "advanced technology in place to prevent such occurrences from happening," the expert continued.
"This is most likely a stunning - and tragic - single occurrence."
