TikTok Grants The Community Power to Reduce Artificial Intelligence-Made Content in Their Feeds

Users will soon have a fresh option that enables them to reduce the quantity of AI-created content appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the service disclosed that it now features more than 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

This change is being tested over the following weeks before a full-scale launch. This shift coincides with a surge in content created by AI, driven by new content generation software.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that approximately 10% of the quickest rising content creators on another major platform primarily display AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this content is classified as low-quality AI content, a term for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is often absurd or bizarre.

Based on user feedback that numerous viewers enjoy content produced via AI tools, from digital art to educational videos, and we intend to give people the ability to see more or less of that, based on their own choices,” stated a spokesperson.

Scale of AI Content

The platform announced that there are presently 1.3bn videos on its app tagged as artificially created. In total, in excess of 100 m videos are submitted to the service each day, making AI content a relatively small portion of its total content library.

Customizing Your Feed

Viewers will be in a position to reduce or increase the volume of artificial media they watch by accessing the topic control option in the app and picking the AI content topic. Additional categories that can already be adjusted under the filter encompass news, fashion, aesthetics, and choreography.

Platform Guidelines

The platform’s policies require content makers to tag “realistic” AI-made content, and it forbids dangerous deepfakes of celebrities or emergencies. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is without a tag can be taken down under its community policies.

Furthermore, the app will now apply an artificially created label to content made using its built-in AI features, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for identifying AI-generated material. This step is designed to help prevent users from attempting to evade the disclosure requirement.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is also establishing a two million dollar educational fund for professionals and groups to develop educational content about using AI responsibly. This initiative will support charitable organizations specializing in training coding and technology.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has supported its moderation strategy, during controversy over plans to lay off numerous review team members in the United Kingdom. It is expected to cut 439 jobs in its content moderation division in its British office, with trade unions and online safety experts voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A senior executive stated that people-led review would still have a role, but AI can safeguard staff by filtering out the most harmful content before it is viewed by people. The platform announced a 76% decrease in disturbing and violent content seen by safety staff over the past year due to the use of its automated systems.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we also think it’s highly necessary to limit contact with dangerous material as swiftly, which is why a lot of the machine support is making a difference process content quickly.”
