Rob Edwards and O'Neil are two of the early candidates in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was dismissed on the weekend after the squad's 10-match winless start to the top-flight campaign.
And both candidates - both of who have previous associations to the club - are part of the options to be considered by the club ownership.
The manager is presently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential hurdle to his appointment at Molineux.
However the former Luton Town manager - who played over a century of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a leading contender for the vacancy.
The mid-career manager is said to have support from the Wolves directors as they start the process of appointing a new head coach.
O'Neil is additionally emerging as a unexpected candidate, even though he would be a surprising choice considering he was released by the club in December last year.
The former West Ham player is currently unemployed which means the club would not need to pay any buyout fee.
