Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her battle with depression after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included high-profile passengers.

The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.

She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her lab work and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was buried under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose support helped save her. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She added that even with the backlash, important benefits had emerged from the mission, such as spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
